The former Providence Bleaching, Dyeing and Calendering Company
The Plant, a vibrant mixed-use development in the heart of the City's emerging mill district, is the result of a unique private/non-profit joint venture. Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse (SBER) and the not-for-profit PUENTE are partnering on the transformation of seven buildings at the historic Providence Dyeing, Bleaching and Calendering Mill in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Clustered around the Woonasquatucket River, this riverfront district now includes five major redevelopment projects representing three million square feet of commercial, residential and retail uses.
Today, the Plant is alive with very different activity: 29 flexible live/work units house artisans and small entrpreneurs, including graphic designers, photographers, jewelry designers and sculptors. 23,000 square feet of bright commercial space is now or soon to be home to environmental consultants, a historic preservation firm and local-serving non-profit organizations. This mixed-use community is now served by 3,650 square foot Cuban Revolution restaurant in an inspiring space that has literally risen from the burned-out shadow of its former shell. This haven for artists and entrepreneurs in a collaborative setting punctuated by a central public courtyard and one of the City's most important public art contributions in Gillian Christy's "Embrace" on the 55-foot smokestack.
Building on the common elements of historic preservation, environmental restoration, community revitalization and mixed use, The Plant is quickly becoming a model for the State of Rhode Island's new economic development strategy focused on quality of place, innovation and opportunity for all.
