Durham

American Tobacco Historic District

OVERVIEW

Historical Fact
Durham is home to the oldest brick tobacco warehouses in the entire nation, dating back to 1874.
Arts at ATHD
SBER is working with a local artist to transform the Stand Pipe at American Tobacco into a major urban icon by installing a site-specific permanent public art piece.

SBER's investment in Durham is focused on the revitalization of the American Tobacco Historic District, an historic complex made up of 5 buildings near the city's downtown. This is the second phase of the American Tobacco Historic District redevelopment project and is estimated to cost $65 million. The complex is adjacent to the home field of the Durham Bulls Minor League Baseball team. It is a historic complex dating back to 1890's when the area's four largest tobacco firms joined to form The American Tobacco Company. In 2004 SBER established a regional office in Durham, and currently employs over 20 people.

SBER IN THE COMMUNITY

SBER has pledged $50,000 to help construct a new farmers market at Durham Central Park. The farmers market will be a 9,200-square-foot pavilion that will include approximately 40 stalls for farmers to sell their fruit, produce and flowers.
