Retracing the history of Baltimore's Jones Falls River

JONES FALLS VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD

Scope of Investment
285,000 sq ft and 200 Residential Units.
Local Landmarks
The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is one of the oldest zoos in the country, established in 1876.

The Jones Falls River played an important role in the initial growth of Baltimore's economy due to the 260-foot drop from its headwaters to the harbor which provided waterpower for the operation of gristmills, iron foundries, and also textile mills. Industrial buildings line the river's banks as it winds its way towards downtown from north of the city. SBER has undertaken the redevelopment of several of these historic industrial complexes, including Clipper Mill and the Stieff Silver building, both visible from Interstate 83.

SBER IN THE COMMUNITY

SBER has a long-standing commitment to Druid Hill Park, home to the Maryland Zoo and one of the cities treasures. Given our passion for parks and green spaces, SBER has provided and will continue to provide both in-kind and financial contributions in support of the park's master plan. The centerpiece of SBER's commitment to Druid Hill Park is the uncovering and restoration of Three Sister's Ponds, once one of the highlights of Druid Hill Park. It once housed an open air Sea Lion exhibit and Carp pond. For decades, the ponds were overgrown and all but hidden. Now, thanks to the hard work of hundreds of volunteers, visitors to the park can enjoy this historical landmark once again.
