A unique opportunity to contribute to history
the project involves the renovation and addition to the historic building that originally served as the headquarters for the oldest African American maritime business in America. Design goals include achievement of a silver or gold LEEDS certification in the use of green and sustain-able design concepts. The construction will include the use of donated materials and in-kind services, incorporated student labor and pro-bono services from local businesses. The new center will house the boatwright's shop for the USS Constellation and support educational programs for disadvantaged youth, focusing on maritime history and boat building. Included in the new construction and renovations are classrooms, offices, exhibition spaces, boat building shop and cafe. SBER is the construction manager, working in the pre-construction phase to help the owner and architect develop plans that are within the organization's limited budget.
