Encouraging Hope & Rebuilding Neighborhood Pride

EAST BALTIMORE NEIGHBORHOOD

East Baltimore is on its way to becoming the "New East Side" as envisioned by the City of Baltimore, citizens, community and church groups, and local businesses. The East Baltimore Development Inc. (EBDI) founded in 2002 is a non-profit organization that is helping to lead the vision of an 80-acre, $800 million urban redevelopment effort. To realize this vision, EBDI has engaged a number of initiatives including; educational initiatives, workforce development and employment, community development planning, financial education, community beautification, and a community based small grants program. With work already underway in the neighborhood this ten-plus year project will help create the vibrant and healthy neighborhood that the community envisions.

PARTNERING IN THE COMMUNITY

SBER is proud to be part of the team selected to redevelop the Brewhouse and Bottle Building of the American Brewery. Our partners, Humanim Inc., and Gotham Development LLC are re-developing this historic neighborhood landmark into the home of for Humanim’s Baltimore headquarters, housing 250 employees including sixty employees that will be hired over the first year of occupancy. Humanim is a 35-year old Maryland-based social and human services provider that has delivered programs and services in East Baltimore for the last 20 years. The Brewhouse will house Humanim’s offices and the Bottle Building, a 60,000 square foot 1937 industrial building will be converted into a center for organizations working in community arts, community services and small business development.

The redevelopment of the Brewhouse and Bottle Building is critical to the revitalization of the East Baltimore neighborhood of Broadway East. When completed, the buildings along with the already completed Cole Higgs Center will become an important hub of activity in the community—generating jobs and providing much-needed social services—while also sparking additional investment.
