The Evolution of an Urban College Town
The Charles Village neighborhood is located just north of downtown Baltimore, and the home to Johns Hopkins University and Union Memorial Hospital. SBER is undertaking several significant redevelopment projects in the Charles Village neighborhood, including the creation of new student housing, for-sale housing, retail space, and structured parking.
In February 2003, SBER created the Charles Village Task Force consisting of over 100 representatives from surrounding community and business associations, non-profits and institutions. Throughout the year long process, the Task Force met regularly to review and discuss plans for the projects. With the active support of the Task Force, the community overwhelmingly approved the development plans. Many of the Task Force's representatives continue an active dialog with SBER to this day.
As part of its annual JWR Community Service Day, SBER partnered with a wide range of community stakeholders to dramatically improve Wyman Park Dell, an Olmsted Bros. designed park. Over the course of 3 consecutive summers, SBER and its partners spent countless hours upgrading and improving the Dell. The Dell is now the focus of a community-driven master plan to build on the work SBER spearheaded and restore the park as the community center it was originally designed to be.
