The cornerstone to the revitalization of Canton
The Can Company is a landmark along Canton's revitalized waterfront. The $21 million renovation was an opportunity to promote Smart Growth by transforming a vacant factory into a vibrant retail and office center. The Can Company was the first Maryland property to successfully complete the Brownfields Voluntary Clean-Up Program through the Maryland Department of the Environment. The metamorphosis included the restoration of the industrial steel windows; meticulous repairing and repainting of the brick walls; and salvage and restoration of virtually all distinctive stacks, ventilators, and monitors on the roofscape. The revitalization effort for the complex involved Historic Tax Credits and complies fully with all National Park Service, Maryland Historical Trust, and Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP) standards.
In 2005, Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse in conjunction with architect Ziger/Snead developed the Flagship Building at The Can Company. This free-standing building features 9,680 square feet of retail space. Surrounded by some of the City's best retailers and restaurants, the Flagship location offers a steady flow of traffic including more than 35,000 commuters and area residents who drive past the site at the corner of Boston Street each day as well as the foot traffic from several upscale residential developments nearby.
